Ypres was founded in the 10th Century.  In 1914 for four years the city was shelled and reduced to ruins. 500,000 soldiers died and 170 cemeteries are reminders of the human sacrifice.  The Menin Gate is the famous British war memorial of the first world war, opened in 1927 the gate bears the names of 54,896 soldiers who were reported missing. Each evening at 8.00pm the 'Last Post' is sounded by buglers of the fire brigade under the archway at the Menin Gate.
